Our Story
Meet the Artists: Britt and Sunshine Smith
Britt and Sunshine Smith are the husband-and-wife team behind Potterysmiths — a creative partnership decades in the making. High school sweethearts who have been married for more than 30 years, their shared story has always centered around family, craftsmanship, and a love of clay.
They began their journey in Durango, Colorado, where Sunshine’s father worked as a pottery professor for over 40 years. His influence sparked a deep appreciation for pottery in both Britt and Sunshine, laying the foundation for their work today. After high school, Britt apprenticed with a production potter, refining his technical skills and discovering the rhythm of the wheel that still inspires him.
In 1997, the Smiths moved to Utah, where Britt embarked on a 24-year career in law enforcement with the Pleasant Grove Police Department, retiring as Captain in 2025. Serving his community was a source of pride and purpose — but pottery remained his passion. Now retired, Britt is thrilled to be dedicating himself full-time to his lifelong craft.
Together, Britt and Sunshine bring warmth, tradition, and a touch of story to every handmade piece. Their family — four children and five grandchildren strong — continues to inspire their work, reminding them that the best things in life are made with patience, care, and a personal touch.
